Auckland goes RWC Crazy…

It's been an exciting few days with the start of the Rugby World Cup and, in particular, the opening ceremonies in Auckland.

S&T's Auckland staff  joined in the festivities with drinks late Friday afternoon while watching the droves of people walking across Victoria Park and Fanshawe St, heading towards the Viaduct and Quay Street Downtown to Party Central. Our office is also appropriately attired in All Black gear, thanks to Andrea.

With the festivities came a few snags. Some of our staff had difficulties getting home when they couldn't reach the Ferry Building and public transportation shut down. Even with these difficulties, there was a great energy in the city. I took a walk down to Quay Street and then back along to North Quay before walking home to Ponsonby. Everywhere I went there were people smiling and a lovely feeling of camaraderie and goodwill.

It also made a bit sad that it takes the World Cup for Downtown Auckland to come alive like this. I wish the city had a fraction of this vibrancy and energy all year round - like other large international cities I've visited.

All to say it's very exciting time and it's wonderful to see Auckland come alive with enthusiasm. And the fireworks were amazing! I've posted some shots that James Zhou, our recent intern, took on Friday night.
