What I Want for Christmas: A super grunty data projector which is able to paint the façade of a building.

As part of the REAL NZ Festival, Wellington’s waterfront buildings have become a canvas for a specially-commissioned outdoor show called Illuma. On Wednesday night I took my family down to the FanZone. The great thing about Illuma is that it gets people out of their homes and exploring their city at night. 

Using state-of-the-art, super bright PIGI technology, lighting and video installation, experts from Australia have created special lighting effects on the exterior of several iconic buildings around the Wellington waterfront FanZone area. Over a 7 minute loop the appearance of the façades of these continually changed.

Wouldn't it be great if there was a permanent projector installation with a connected website where you could download a template, manipulate it and then upload your own images to transform the building? Wellington City Council's Street Lighting Engineer thinks the same so here’s hoping... but I hear each projector has a $120K price tag!
