Porirua Waka Shelter, Porirua
The shelter was designed to store and protect the Te Ahikakariki waka for the future, while also enabling its regular use on the water.
The shelter’s design reflects a ‘meeting of land and sea’: the land in soft green cladding laid at angles to represent the tilted plates of the earth and the fault lines in the area; and the sea in the roof’s reflective corrugated aluminium and translucent fibreglass sheeting. Drive past it at night, and blue lighting creates the feeling that the building is part of the sea at its feet.
Large doors at each end enable the waka to be moved easily in and out and cleaned down while inside. It’s also on show, with a lower mesh screen portion that displays the waka to the street while keeping it secure.
