ESR Forensic Service Centre and New DNA Laboratory

This new building provides a modern, functional Forensic Service Centre, incorporating a large, open search area for examining forensic evidence in Mount Albert, Auckland. White PVC worktops and high lighting levels provide maximum visibility for this exacting task. Separate write-up areas, where scientists record the results of their examinations, sit to the perimeter. The centre also contains isolation rooms, an exhibit store, a cold room and wash-up bay together with non-laboratory areas such as its library, common room, training facilities and offices.

The DNA laboratory was created by lifting the roof of the Forensic Services Building, which was designed for the addition of a future level. The laboratory is planned to house a range of activities and processes, each requiring a combination of separate containment rooms and joint shared spaces. Glazed partitions in work areas are incorporated to provide safety by peer observation, to maximise spaciousness in small containment areas, and to allow visitor viewing without penetrating work spaces.

The laboratory design minimises ledges and other dust-attracting surfaces. Ceilings, walls and floors are finished flush to facilitate regular cleaning. A sophisticated air-conditioning system was installed, creating pressure differentials between particular spaces to assist in the containment of samples.
