Expanded International Arrivals Area, Auckland Airport
S&T combined extensive planning and detail-conscious design to create the new 3A International Arrivals Area at Auckland Airport - New Zealand’s main gateway for overseas tourists and visitors.
Clear organization of space and use of way-finding were key in the design of the larger arrivals area including border processing hall and duty-free shopping area. Careful planning also took into account future expansions.
By introducing key interior finishes at critical points the complexities of the airport’s numerous functions have been simplified and rationalised, most notably in “way-finding” and the offering of a unique New Zealand experience.
The interiors reflect the airport company’s brand ‘Representing New Zealand’ and New Zealand’s natural environment, with contemporary references to the ocean, foreshore and forest landscapes illustrating a pictorial journey of settlers and visitors alike.
Culturally-themed design reflects New Zealand’s Maori heritage. The use of perforated tukutuku patterned timber plywood ceiling elements in combination with floor and wall patterns lead passengers towards immigration processing. The “ceremony” of greeting is represented in the carpet pattern with references to taniko, a traditional Maori ceremonial welcome mat.
“Outstanding development and gateway to New Zealand. The project will act as a model for future airport buildings.” - Jury, Property Council NZ Awards
“Tourism New Zealand is delighted by Auckland Airport’s upgrade project, which makes the airport a world-class arrival point. I am particularly pleased to see eye-catching modern architecture combined with New Zealand’s Maori culture and history as part of the welcome our visitors will receive.” - George Hickton, CE of Tourism New Zealand
