Starship Children’s Hospital

This 200-bed hospital, constructed for the Auckland Area Health Board, contains five general and medical wards and special Infectious, Burns, Neonatal and Oncology Units. A full range of clinical services, excluding dietary, is incorporated in the design.

The design features long, curving ward floors and a seven-storey glass roof courtyard.

The hospital’s plan maximises natural light and ventilation and achieves separation between visitors and patient/staff circulation. Bedrooms were designed to allow parents to stay overnight. There are also parent lounges, and a whanau unit allows larger family groups to stay. Ward layouts provide efficient, safe nursing with reduced walking distances. Single rooms are situated close to the central nursing station and multi-bed rooms towards the end of the wards.
