Wellington International Airport Aviation Security Centre
The Aviation Security Service has been relocated to the Airport Fire Service building with an impressive glass and steel-framed addition that complements the airport terminal design.
The security and fire services are essential airport activities that need to be physically close to the terminal, so the architecture reflects this relationship. The roof's "flying" structure and the outwardly sloping windows are two of the main elements reflecting the terminal design, along with a complementary colour scheme.
The significant amount of noise generated by aircraft necessitated thick, laminated glass and the security operations needed to have a clear view of the surroundings, so the expansive windows have been tinted to reduce glare. The large roof overhang provides essential shade to the windows and reduces the cooling requirements for the office space.
