Waka shelter, Porirua, Wellington
This structure has been designed as a deliberate expression of ‘shelter’: turning its back on the prevailing winds. Designed in consultation with Ngati Toa and the Porirua City Council, this building accommodates a large ceremonial waka on the shores of the Porirua harbour. Simple materials were chosen to express the concept of 'simple shelter'. These materials will age gracefully over time.
The shelter won a Bronze Medal in the Public and Institutional Spaces category from the Designers Institute of New Zealand in 2008.
