Wanganui Prison - At Risk Unit, Wanganui
This facility was the first stage of a redevelopment programme and has been specially designed to accommodate inmates at risk of self-harm in a controlled, secure environment.
Careful planning and detailing allows for efficient assessment and observation of each inmate. The accommodation provides suitably robust and safe fittings while exterior windows allow calming views to a landscaped and screened courtyard. The required "hard" materials for the courtyard have been softened by the judicious use of colour and texture.
Maintenance work on all building services is able to be carried out without entering the most secure areas.
This project received a New Zealand Institute of Architects Resene Local Award in 2001.
