Youth Justice Facility, Auckland
This residential centre provides an integrated, supervised setting for up to 46 young persons. The centre incorporates recreational, educational, cultural, residential and administration facilities constructed around a central courtyard and linked by a covered walkway.
Effective security measures are achieved with a secure care unit and external fencing to outdoor recreational areas and to the perimeter of the site.
The concept was to create a secure but caring environment reflecting domestic scale, with details and finishes, although resilient, having a ‘soft quality’ e.g. timber doors rather than steel, the use of various colours for individual room identity, and decorative elements.
