Science Building 303 Extension (University of Auckland)
This seven-level extension to the Science Building 303 at Auckland University provides computer teaching rooms, study spaces and academic bases for the Computer Science and Software Engineering disciplines.
The design of the extension builds on the formal architecture of the existing buildings, whilst achieving a modern expression through the incorporation of a steel structure and the use of contrasting, lightweight materials. The appearance of the extension is characterised by the three main facades being divided into bays by full-height steel columns. The bays are infilled by modular horizontal wall panels of aluminium or clear and fritted glass.
Overlaying the steel structure with areas of curtain wall gives depth to the new façade - a reinterpretation of the existing building with its highly modulated, heavy exterior.
