Home of Compassion, Wellington
The design of this chapel, hospital and rest home complex in Island Bay, Wellington incorporates a central courtyard, colonnaded walkways, conservatories, skylights, stained glass and a cupola.
The hospital wards and new convent block have a domestic flavour, with white weatherboards and a grey shingle roof. In contrast, the administration areas of the complex are clad in brick.
The chapel is a focal point of the design and is a response to the spiritual needs of the sisters and patients. It recalls the style of early New Zealand timber churches as a place of worship and solitude.
