Starship Children's Hospital
This 200-bed hospital, the winner of a New Zealand Institute of Architects’ Award, was constructed for the Auckland Area Health Board, and was completed in 1991. It contains five general and medical wards and special Infectious, Burns, Neonatal and Oncology Units. A full range of clinical services, excluding dietary, is incorporated in the design.
Features of the design are the long, curving ward floors and the seven-storey glass roof courtyard. Stephenson&Turner undertook both architectural and building services design for the hospital, including the specialist anti-contamination considerations necessary for HVAC and air conditioning in medical laboratories and operating theatres.
